We would like to get rid of the image of a conventional dentist by providing dental treatment without pulling, pain, or drilling.

Dental treatments have been associated with pain and fear for decades. Back in the days,
one dentist would handle about 100-150 patients (most of which are in need of treatment for tooth decay) in a day. Because of this uneven ratio and time constraints, dental treatments were harsh and performed without anesthesia, making it an era where treatment is tantamount to pain. Although this image may remain deeply rooted at present, times have already changed. As a dental clinic, our concept is to provide dental treatments that do not involve pulling, pain, and drilling. I believe it is important to get rid of the image of a traditional dentist and to make this treatment method known to many.

The still clearly remember the words "Cherish what you feel at the moment" from my professor when I entered the university. As I start to learn about dental care, I was told to never forget the image and sense of providing dental treatment to the general population. But once you get accustomed to that environment when working as a dentist, it would be inevitable to prioritize your own view and convenience and forget the general notion about the "fear of receiving dental care". I didn't want to end up like that, so I always keep those words in mind. As I go about my day to day practice, I have discovered a treatment method named "Doc's Best Cement".

While conventional tooth decay treatment considers the blackened and hollowed-out part as a decayed tooth, Doc's Best Cement considers hollowed-out tooth as a result of being dissolved by bacteria and acid from tooth decay and is treated separately. Instead of treating the hollowed-out tooth for tooth decay, this method kills the bacteria responsible for it, preventing the cavity from growing bigger. Also, Doc's Best Cement is rich in minerals, so it restores the minerals that were lost during the cavity formation due to the acid of bacteria and strengthens the teeth. It works in two ways by stopping the bacterial activity of tooth decay and strengthening teeth, and its effects last semi-permanently, so the tooth receiving this treatment is theoretically cured. Since it involves no pulling or drilling, we were able to achieve a painless treatment for tooth decay.

Doc's Best Cement is said to be a treatment method originally from overseas and has circulated in developing countries through dental volunteers. When I started to look for a more advanced treatment method than the existing analog dental technique, where dentists uselessly drill their patient's teeth, I met a dentist who used this treatment method and joined a seminar. That event opened doors for me to learn about the existence of this technology. Basically, I am the type of person who tries doing things without thinking too much about the difficulty, and I believe that it is important to try things first before making a conclusion. Doc's Best Cement is a better method than I thought, and since the patient reacted well and had a good prognosis, I started introducing it to my clinic. However, it has not yet reached most parts of the world, let alone Japan. It is because this treatment is not regulated by Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare, and will not be covered with insurance.

Although one advantage in Japanese health insurance is that everyone can equally receive basic dental and medical treatment, I feel that it is difficult to introduce new and advanced treatment methods. In our clinic, our patients choose between treatments that are covered by insurance and those that are not only after receiving a detailed explanation during counseling in their initial visit. Also, we put importance in disseminating information on our website, and we list essential details like procedures not covered by insurance, fees, and values, so patients often come to us already equipped with these details.

Experiencing a "pain-free" treatment first hand, about 80% of patients who come to our clinic for tooth decay treatment and have already undergone the choose Doc's Best Cement. Even our blog gets about 30,000 access monthly, so I feel that there are a lot of people who feel uncertain about their dental health. In the future, we would like to continue our efforts to get rid of the scary and painful image of traditional dental treatment and to be able to shift from "treating" to "preventing" tooth decay. Since Japan is already an aging society, it is said that by 2025, the demand for home-visit medical treatment will increase by 30%, while outpatient treatment will decrease by 20%. Home-visit medical treatment is a field that should be focused on, and Doc's Best Cement is a treatment method that can be performed in a home visit. As I have previously mentioned, we do not drill tooth, so we do not need large dental equipment. In the same manner that it is being used in developing countries, it is the best treatment method to be performed at home.

This technology is required in an aging society, and since the demand is expected to increase in the future, I think that it is necessary to prepare a system that could meet their needs. And to increase the number of dentists who can perform this method aside from our clinic, we hope to further promote through seminars and lectures the technology and expertise for them to be able to provide Doc's Best Cement. Better treatment methods will surely rise in the future, like the boom of regenerative medicine that enables restoration of lost teeth. Although it may take time before it becomes commonplace, I would like to contribute to the dental health of the locals by accessing the latest information about dental treatment methods and continue learning.
